Lakefront Home with Cold Climate Heat Pump

This lakefront home has 10 foot ceilings and lots of lots of windows and light taking advantage of the ceiling height.  The views to the lake and sky are porch like.  There are sliders on the lakeside in the event that a lakeside deck might be permitted so for now some guardrails with cables keep the view clean.  The owners opted for a foundation system that I recommend, Thermomass, where the rigid insulation is within the foundation walls.  In this case we went with a 12 inch wall that was made of 4 inches of concrete on either side of 4 inches of foam.  The wythes of concrete are tied together with double sided polypropylene “bed of nails” which stick through the foam and into each wythe.  Light, airy, and heated/cooled by air.
